LMD vs SLM: Decision Signals

LMD is often attractive for large parts, local material addition, repair, cladding, near-net-shape builds, and hybrid manufacturing. Its value often appears when only a region needs material or when the part is too large or expensive to remake from scratch.

SLM/LPBF is often attractive for small complex geometry, internal channels, fine detail, and powder-bed design freedom. It can be powerful when the geometry is designed for the process.

Neither process is automatically superior. Context decides. Tight tolerances, surface finish, heat sensitivity, support strategy, post-machining, inspection, and cost all shape the decision.

The practical comparison should not stop at the printing step. Post-processing and inspection matter as much as the deposition or build route.
